- Program Description
- The Summer Academy for Gifted & Talented Scholars is an intensive three-week residential
program for 75 academically ambitious students completing the 8th and 9th grades. The office of
Pre-College Programs seeks approximately 10 energetic student leaders to live and work with Summer
Institute attendees as residential mentors. As role models and enforcers of program policy, residential
mentors will work as a team to maintain a safe living and learning environment in which to guide and
engage with students.
- Time commitment:
- June 29, 2009 -- July 25, 2009
- Includes one week of training
- This schedule allows time to take summer classes or study abroad suring summer session 1
and have time off before fall semester begins!
- Compensation: $1250 plus room & board.
Restrictions
- These are resident positions. You will live on campus with the students.
- Mentors cannot be enrolled in classes during the employment period.
- No outside employment is permitted.
Qualifications
Applicants must have successfully completed at least 30 hours of college credit by June 2009, be in good academic
standing, possess leadership experience & ability, and have a lot of energy and a strong sense of responsibility.
Preferred: Succcessful completion of 60 hours of college credit, experience
facilitating student groups and residential life experience.
Expectations & Responsibilities
The live-in summer residential staff serves as a group of role models and mentors while enforcing program policies to
student participants. It is crucial for the staff to function effectively as a team in creating a living/learning environment
through support of academics and facilitation of educational, cultural, and social activities for program participants.
Mentor positions are busy and fast-paced, highly demanding of time, energy and enthusiasm. Good candidates will meet or
exceed our basic and preferred qualifications; successful candidates will demonstrate a keen sense of responsibility; enjoy
interacting with a wide range of people; always keep the students' best interests foremost in mind; and look forward to
challenging students to question, learn and grow.
Residential mentors must be able to: supervise youth in a consistent, equitable manner in a variety of structured and
unstructured environments; assist in the development and facilitation of afternoon academic activities; attend all meals,
activities and outings; complete documentation and reports as assigned; demonstrate a positive attitude and motivation;
function well in a structured, fast-paced environment; and work excitedly and effectively with a diverse group of students
and staff.
Note: To help ensure the safety of the participants of Pre-College Programs, final appointment is contingent upon
successful state and federal background checks.
