Gifted & Talented Scholars Frequently Asked Questions
How can I become a GT Scholar?
To become a GT Scholar, students must be nominated by an educator, whether
that is a teacher, counselor, or administrator.
What makes a student eligible for nomination to the GT Scholars program?
Students that have shown evidence of high academic ability and/or achievement based on the GT Scholars eligibility criteria. Students must be in grades 6-12 and meet a minimum of two (2) of the following criteria to be considered for the GT Scholars program.

Scored in the 90th percentile or above on one or more of the major content areas or ability sections of a nationally-normed standardized test (i.e. ITBS or SAT9)

Identified as gifted and/or have participated in a school gifted program

Past or current participant in a talent identification program such as
Duke University’s TIP, Southern Methodist University Talented and
Gifted Program (TAG), The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented
Youth (CYT), etc.

National Honor Society member
-
3.5 grade point average or above in all Pre-AP, AP and/or honors coursework
Educators of students for whom the above criteria is unavailable or inapplicable should contact our office for specific nomination instructions.
Can students who attend private schools or are home-schooled be nominated?
Yes, private school and home-schooled students are eligible for the GT Scholars program. Home-schooled students will need to contact the GT Scholars office for specific instructions concerning application.
Is there a membership fee?
One $25 lifetime membership fee establishes and maintains membership benefits. The Gifted & Talented Scholars program is not for profit, and membership fees help us to provide newsletters, informative mailings and other services and to host events at no additional cost to students.
What are some of the privileges GT Scholars enjoy?
In addition to being recognized as one of the top students in their state, membership privileges include a close association with the University's nationally renowned Honors College, special mailings, frequent online newsletters, a membership card and a certificate of distinction. Students will receive invitations to attend Gifted & Talented Scholars events. Those completing the 6th and 7th grades can apply to attend our iCAMP, and rising 9th and 10th graders can apply to attend the Gifted & Talented Scholars Summer Academy.
Do I have to be a GT Scholar in order to attend the Summer Academy?
No. Any student completing the 6th or 7th grade can apply to attend iCAMP, and all rising 9th and 10th graders with significant academic interest are encouraged to apply to attend the Summer Academy. However, GT Scholars who meet the application deadline and other requirements will be given special priority during the selection process.
