Academics

An inventive and stimulating curriculum is the centerpiece of the Gifted & Talented Scholars Summer Academy. Courses led by University faculty and graduate students cultivate a dynamic learning environment that emphasizes creativity, communication, critical thinking and problem solving. We aim to offer an academic program that gives students the opportunity to explore a variety of subject areas and disciplines more deeply than they are able through the course of study at their local schools. Typically, our curriculum comprises mathematics, engineering, business, literature/writing, theatre, as well as other sciences and social sciences. Specific courses vary each year and reflect faculty availability, interest and expertise. Previous classes have included Marine Biology of Australia, Psychology and the Law, African-American History and Millionaire 101: How to Get Insanely Rich.

Campus Life

Summer Academy students live in a UA residence hall and are supervised by an experienced team of residential mentors. These student leaders also organize extracurricular activities, social events, field trips and small group discussions. Outside the classroom, students have access to University computer labs and the Health, Physical Education and Recreational (HPER) facilities, where they can play basketball and volleyball, swim and more. Meals are provided by Campus Dining Services.

Summer Academy participants start the day with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and finish with lights out at 11 p.m. Students spend weekday mornings in class, and after lunch attend study hall and an academic seminar or presentation. Later in the afternoon, they enjoy at least two hours of free time or recreation. Evenings are filled with mentor facilitated games and challenges, small group activities and recreation, or excursions to see a play or concert. On weekends, the group enjoys daylong field trips to local areas of interest.
